How do you determine what a person is like? You do it by evaluating what a person does. Jesus said, you know someone by their fruit. He said, “You can identify them by their fruit…that is, the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.”
Think about the last sentence…”A good tree produces good fruit and a bad tree produces bad fruit.” What kind of fruit are we producing? If we are believers, our lives will produce fruit. Paul said “the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience…”
So, is the fruit of the spirit evident in our lives? None of us are perfect but our lives should be marked by love and peace and patience and other things. Hatred is not the mark of a Christian. Dishonesty is not the mark of a Christian.
Jesus said, “Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.” May our lives produce fruit from the spirit and actions that glorify God.
Zig Ziglar was a great motivator. In some of his motivational speeches he referred to his “wall of fame.” His “wall of fame” was pictures of people who had helped him along the way. He wanted to be reminded of the people who had helped him in his career.
All of us could do a “wall of fame.” All of us have had someone help us. Maybe it was a teacher who helped us with a subject we were struggling with. Maybe it was a coach who believed in us and encouraged us. Or, perhaps it was a supervisor who gave us an encouraging word in our career. Or, maybe it was a Minister who helped us.
The list could go on and on.. most of us have had someone help us. I encourage you, if you haven’t already done it, to let these special people in your life know that you appreciate them.
The Psalmist said “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.”
So, is there someone who has helped you? Someone who has encouraged you? Let them know. Write them a note. Send them an email. Go visit them. The person who encouraged you may need some encouragement themselves. Let them know you appreciate them.
