Dealing With Jealousy

Ok, be honest with me; you see your neighbor pull into their drive way driving a new car or truck or SUV. Are you happy for them or, is there a little jealousy? You know, we begin to think, “HOW did they afford that?”
What we are dealing with is jealousy.
It’s an emotion as old as Cain and Abel. And it’s still as harmful as it was then.
In Genesis 3, sin came into the world. The serpent tempted Adam and Eve and they took the fruit and sin came into the world.
The Bible tells us that God gave Adam and Eve two boys whom they named Cain and Abel. Abel offered a sacrifice to God that was pleasing to the Lord. Cain knew this but instead of being thankful for this and affirming his brother, he became angry. Jealousy does that to us. We have a difficult time rejoicing when someone else rejoices.
Why is that? Why are we jealous of others? It’s because we want what they have? Ok, why is that? Why are we not satisfied with what God has given us? One of the primary reasons is we are not happy and secure. We don’t have a good relationship with God which can lead us not be content.
Because Cain was jealous he murdered Abel. Then, he was punished because of what he did. Jealousy can lead people to do terrible things.
James said, “What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you do not have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have” (James 4:1-2).
The key to dealing with jealousy is being in the Lord. It means knowing that God has promised to provide for us and being content with God’s provision. Don’t let jealousy consume you. Be content and secure in the Lord.
