Be Careful: Our Actions Do Affect Others

If you have followed my posts in the past you know that I believe strongly in grace and I do not like legalism. But, that doesn’t give us a license to sin. Let’s say a Christian is at a party and perhaps they have consumed some alcoholic beverages.. enough that, they are drunk. Another Christian they know is at the same party and they see them and comment on how much they have drunk. The person may justify their drunkeness by saying, “Hey man, I believe in grace!”
But that’s not what grace means. Yes, we all make mistakes. Yes, we are all sinners… and yes God will forgive us if we ask but, that does not give us permission to sin. In fact we may need to be aware of how our actions affect others.
In I Corinthians 8, Paul dealt with a debate that was taking place among the Corinthians. Some were eating meat they had been sacrificed to pagan idols. Some of the newer Christians didn’t think this was right. Some of the old Christians said, “Hey, there is nothing wrong with this meat… We are ok to eat it.”
But Paul said, “So if what I eat causes another believer to sin, I will never eat meat again as long as I live—for I don’t want to cause another believer to stumble” (I Corinthians 8:13).
As Christians we must understand the impact of our witness and we should never do anything that my cause another Christian to stumble. Yes, there are things that are ok to do… but, if in doing them a younger Christian thinks, “If he’s doing it, I can do it,” then we shouldn’t do that.
Today, be aware of how your actions affect others.
