Do you know someone who is a drug addict or addicted to gambling or alcohol? For that matter, maybe you are struggling with bondage to something.
In Luke 13, on a Sabbath day, a lady came to Jesus in a synagogue. Jesus saw that the woman had been crippled by an evil spirit. For eighteen years, the lady had been bent over because she was unable to stand up. Jesus said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!” Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight.”
But the leader of the synagogue was unhappy that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. Jesus rebuked them and said “…this daughter of Abraham has been in bondage to Satan for eighteen years.”
So what does it mean to be in bondage? It means to be controlled by something. Some are in bondage to alcohol or drugs or gambling or other things. And when you are in bondage, you are being controlled. You aren’t free.
Bondage is powerful. A person may think they, in their own power can break out of bondage, but they can’t. But, they don’t have too. Jesus will help us.
Alcohol and drug addiction are strong but Jesus is greater. If you have a problem with addiction, get help. It’s not a sign of weakness to admit you need help.
It is my understanding that, when a person begins going to AA meetings, the first step is for them to admit they need help. Not be too proud to admit you need help. Jesus will help you break out of whatever you are in bondage too.
