God Helps Us Deal With Our Past

Years ago, I was talking with a person who told me about a worship service. They had attended. The message was on the subject of guilt. The message dealt with the mistakes we’ve made that cause us to feel guilty. Then, at the conclusion of the message, people were invited forward to bring their guilt to the altar and leave it there. This individual told me they had gone forward and felt better after leaving their guilt at the altar. This person had been carrying some guilt around for years. They felt better for being able to unload it.
Lots of people carry guilt. Guilt is associated with things in our past. Most of us have things that happened in our past that bother us.
I have made some mistakes. I wish I could go back and do some things differently but I can’t. I have to set the past aside and press on.
The same is true for you. Maybe you are weighted down by things in your past.
In Genesis 41:51, the Bible talks about Joseph’s first son being born. Joseph named him “Manasseh” which means, “God has made me forget all my troubles and everyone in my father’s family.” Joseph had experienced a tough life up until this point. His brother’s sold him to some travelers. Then, he was put in prison in Egypt only to rise to a position of prominence.
So, now that God has put in a significant position in Egypt, Joseph is thinking about all that has happened to him. As he does, he names his first child “Manasseh” because God was helping him forget his past.
God can help us do the same. If you have made some mistakes, God wants to forgive you and help you move forward. The past is the past. It’s over. You can’t go back and re-do it. All you can do is learn from it and move forward.
Today, let God help you deal with your past. Ask the Lord for forgiveness and, once you have done that, move forward.
Like he did with Joseph, God will help you forget your past.
