Recently, graduations were held all over our area. And, family and friends attended these graduations to express their love for those graduating. As graduates talk with family and friends, most will ask the graduate something like, “what are your plans?” In other words, “Are you going to college and if so, where? Or, if not college, what jobs are you interested in?”
Some graduates were able to say, “I’m going to UGA or Tech or West Georgia or Georgia Highlands or maybe somewhere out of state.” Others may have said, “I’m planning on getting a job.”
Most of the graduates have plans.. but.. those plans will likely change. They just do.. Mine did and I’m sure someone reading this will say, “Yes, my plans changed too.”
The reason is, we don’t know the future; only God does. Proverbs 16:9 says, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”
This verse talks about the sovereignty of God. While we may have some plans, God knows everything. God is sovereign. We can only see partially down the road while the Lord can see it all.
When I graduated from High School, I was going to attend Southeastern Louisiana University, get a degree in education, get a job coaching and teaching and live happily ever after. But God had other ideas. Instead, God called me into the ministry and sent me to Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. I didn’t even know the school existed. I went there and that’s where I met Holli. I wouldn’t have met her if I hadn’t gone to school there. I had plans… but the Lord directed my steps.
Today, I encourage you to give your life and your plans to the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 are two of my favorite verses. They are; “Trust in the Lord will all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct Thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
We may have some plans but the Lord directs our steps and we should be thanfkul He does.
