Today is Palm Sunday. It is a time to remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week which was Jesus final week on earth.
The Jewish people had long expected the coming of Messiah but, they were expecting a Messiah would be a military leader… a conquering hero. They wanted someone to lead them to overthrow the Romans. That’s not what Jesus was about. Jesus was a suffering servant, not a conquering hero.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, He did it on the back of a donkey as opposed to a great white horse. A donkey doesn’t inspire strength and confidence yet, Jesus entered Jerusalem on the back of a donkey .
Jesus entrance provides a model for us of the Christian life. As followers of Christ, we are to be filled with humility. As followers of Christ, we are to be marked by service. That is the opposite of what this world teaches. This world teaches that honor and success is found in position or wealth.
As we worship today, as we remember the triumphal entry of Jesus, let’s remember His humility and learn from it. Greatness for the Christian, is found in service. Greatness for the Christian is found in humility. Jesus provides an example for us on this Palm Sunday.
